Mugham in Montana documentary titles from DVD

Mugham in Montana. Dir. Thomas Goltz. Prod. Tale Heydarov

In addition to TEAS TV, TEAS produced the multi-award winning documentary film Mystical Music of Mugham Comes to Montana. The film documents the exhausting cross-cultural musical road trip of the group Qadim Sharq (Ancient East) across the Treasure State, with performances at Rocky Mountain College in Billings in the east, the music department of Montana State University in Bozeman in south-central Montana, the Livingston library on the Yellowstone River, and finally at the University of Montana at Missoula in the west. Here, the group was joined by Jeffery Werbock, the famed American mugham specialist, for a final concert/jam session. En-route, the group opened the ears of hundreds of locals to the magic of the mystical, non-rhythmic, modal music of Azerbaijani mugham.

Mugham Comes to Montana

The TEAS-produced documentary, Mystical Music of Mugham Comes to Montana, a 15-min music video about four traditional Azerbaijani musicians touring the US state of Montana has been honoured with a plethora of awards. In August 2009, the film won an Award of Merit in the short film/documentary category at the Accolade Film Festival Competition in La Jolla, California.

"We are pleased we could honour you for your high-quality production and for being an important part of the Accolade Competition", Dr Thomas Baker, Chairperson of The Accolade, told the Director, Thomas Goltz, a Professor at Montana State University. He commented: "The Accolade is not an easy award to win."

The Mystical Music of Mugham Comes to Montana detailed the exhausting cross-cultural musical road trip of the group Qadim Sharq (Ancient East) across the Treasure State, with performances at Rocky Mountain College in Billings in the east, the music department of Montana State University in Bozeman in south-central Montana, the Livingston library on the Yellowstone River, and finally at the University of Montana at Missoula in the west. Here, the group was joined by Jeffery Werbock, the famed American mugham specialist, for a final concert/jam session. En-route, the group opened the ears of hundreds of locals to the magic of the mystical, non-rhythmic, modal music of Azerbaijani mugham.

The Mystical Music of Mugham Comes to Montana was shot by Randy Jacobs, with extra footage from Ian Clark, being edited by Katy Magruder of the Montana Sprout Group. Special logistical assistance was provided by Vahid Alekbarov, a refugee from Armenian-occupied Nagorno-Karabakh, now resident in Billings, together with Elin Suleymanov, Azerbaijani Consul General to Los Angeles and the 13 western US states, including Montana.

"It was a tremendous team effort and I would like to thank everyone involved", explained Goltz, a noted author on Azerbaijan and the post-Soviet Caucasus countries of Georgia and Chechnya. He concluded: "It is a delight to be explaining Azerbaijani art and culture, as opposed to war and political collapse."

The Accolade, now in its fifth year, recognises film, television and videography professionals who demonstrate exceptional achievement in craft and creativity. Entries are judged by highly-qualified professionals from the film and television industry.

The film was subsequently awarded two further awards. In December 2009, it achieved an El Capitan award at the Yosemite International Film Festival in California, USA. The film was also selected for exhibition at the Big Easy Film Festival in New Orleans, USA. In January 2010, the film was selected as a Sierra Nevada Award Winner at the 2010 Mountain Film Festival – the festival’s highest level of recognition, winning in the ‘Mountains-Environmental‘ category.
