As part of the 8th annual L’Europe autour de l’Europe (Europe around Europe) film festival, The European Azerbaijan Society (TEAS) is organising a screening of the documentary The Waiting. The film festival, taking place at various venues across Paris from 13 March to 14 April 2013, features screenings of around 65 feature films, documentaries, shorts, animations and experimental films made by auteurs of European cinema.

The Waiting addresses the topic of internally displaced persons (IDPs), focusing on the Azerbaijanis who were made IDPs as a result of the Armenian–Azerbaijan war. Directed by Andrew Thompson, Lucy Bailey and Chingiz Abdullayev, and produced by Explore Films, the film will be shown at L’Entrepôt on 11 April 2013. The screening will be followed by a drinks reception and a Q&A session with Chingiz Abdullayev.

Across the globe an estimated 27 million people have been internally displaced by conflict.  One such conflict, on Europe’s doorstep, is between the former Soviet Republics of Armenia and Azerbaijan.  Since the crisis began some 20 years ago, many thousands have been killed; but many more people, some half a million – 6.7 per cent of Azerbaijan’s total population – have been forced to flee their homes and live like refugees in their own country. With the peace process stalled and the constant threat of resumption of all out war, ‘The Waiting’ is a vivid and compelling portrait of those driven by the hope that one day they will return home.
