Interview: Al Cook, Vice-President, Shah Deniz Development, BP

Al Cook, interviewed on the sidelines of the TEAS Business Forum 2014, is responsible for the integrated leadership for development of the Shah Deniz field in the Caspian Sea, which holds an estimated 1.2tn m3 of gas. In December 2013, a $45bn final investment decision (FID) was signed between the BP-led Shah Deniz Consortium and Azerbaijani government. This will see Azerbaijani Caspian gas flowing through the Trans-Anatolian Pipeline (TANAP) and Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) to Italy. Initial production will be 16bn m3 (bcm) per annum, increasing to 23bcm by 2023. In this interview, Al outlines the logistical and technical hurdles that are being overcome, the future impact of TAP and TANAP on gas prices and Azerbaijan’s role as an energy transit nation.
