An interview with Richard Shearer, at TEAS Business Forum
More than 250 Lords, MPs, Diplomats, academics, and businesspersons from Azerbaijan, Turkey and across Europe attended the annual TEAS Business Forum organised by The European Azerbaijan Society on 2 May. Hosted in the historic London venue of No. 4, Hamilton Place, off Park Lane, this provided a valuable opportunity to learn about the potential for western businesses in two of the world’s fastest-developing nations. Entitled Azerbaijan and Turkey – Diverse Investment Opportunities, this event focused on a wide range of sectors, including energy; project finance and investment banking; development of the ICT industry; agriculture and food-processing. Altogether, nearly 40 speakers were on hand to give their expert opinions.
Richard Shearer became CEO of Bakcell in April 2011, and has broad international experience, spanning the USA, Asia and Europe. His experience has focused on the provision of telecommunications services in the wireless segment in some of the world’s most competitive markets. He started his career at Cable & Wireless, UK, and from 1990–97 worked at Coopers & Lybrand Consulting (PWC), where he performed various international assignments.
From 1997–2000 he became the CEO of DiGiTelecom in Malaysia. He then spent a year as Chief Commercial Officer of T-Mobile in UK. Following this, he joined Empower Interactive Group as the CEO, and led the company until 2004. Between 2005–08 he was the CEO of BTC Mobile EOOD (Vivatel) in Bulgaria. Richard also served as the Management Board Member for the Consumer Segment in TPSA/Orange, the leading mobile operator in that country, and Incumbent Telco, a new TV Service Provider across Poland.
